comparing policies, make sure that you are comparing coverage's
not all policies are created equal!
After you find the policy that best fits your needs, it should then be
reviewed annually as your needs change.
Some common terms that may be used in your auto policy:
Bodily Injury Liability (BI)- pays for damages or expenses to others for accidents caused by drivers covered under your policy.
Medical Payment Coverage- pays medical and funeral bills caused by accidents to you, your family members, passengers in your car, and victims who are bicyclists or pedestrians, no matter who is at fault.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)- similar to medical payments but includes 80% of lost income and additional costs to hire a caregiver for the injured person.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM)- pays your expenses caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver who does not have any coverage or does not have enough coverage to cover your loss.
Bodily Injury UM/UIM- pays without deductibles for damages such as pain and
suffering, lost income, disability, medical costs, and disfigurement.
Property Damage UM/UIM- pays for damaged vehicles, rental cars, and
belongings in your car at time of accident after you meet your deductible.
Comprehensive Coverage- repairs or replaces the vehicle for damages that were not caused by collision no matter who is at fault, less your deductibles. Exampes: fire, flood, hail, or if car is stolen or damaged
Collision Coverage- pays for the cost of repairs or replacement of your vehicle that is damaged by a collision, no matter who is a fault, less your deductibles.
Tow and Labor Coverage- pays costs to tow your vehicle as well as labor to fix your vehicle for some minor items that can be fixed on site where your vehicle has broken down.
Rental Reimbursement Coverage- reimburses you for the cost to rent a vehicle if your vehicle is damaged or stolen and the damage is covered under your policy.
